Add it according to taste in small amounts otherwise you could blow your lid.

For the cumin, about 1 teaspoon is good for starters. You can add more later but chili powder is a better way of adding flavor.











For chili powder, it can vary. If you are using a store bought chili powder, which is typically just labeled “chili powder” on the bottle or package, you can use at least 2-3 tablespoons to start and add more later on. If you are using a store-bought pure chili powder, such as those typically labeled something like, “Chipotle Chili Powder” or “Ancho Chili Powder” you should use a lot less. Here, start with 1 Tablespoon and move up slowly from there.





Chili powders that name a specific chili in their name only contain that chili which can be quite hot in some cases. Also, these single-chili powders typically lack the small amounts of garlic powder, cumin, salt, and other spices that are mixed into the generic chili powders.





With both cumin and especially with chili powder, it is essential to ad some at the start and test as you go along. Before serving, you have to test the chili seasoning once again and make final adjustments. Adding salt, black pepper or more chili powder are usually the best ways to improve the flavor, although you can also add more cumin if you like.











For tomatoes, I would use 1 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes to start. I prefer diced or chopped canned tomatoes without any additional seasoning or flavors. You can also use some other type of tomatoes, but be aware that if you use the whole tomatoes from the can, then you will probably have to simmer the chili for a period of time to allow the tomatoes to break down enough so that every portion gets some in the end.





Most recipes use more tomatoes, but you don’t have a lot of meat in this recipe and using too much can overcome the meat altogether.





I also typically use some type of canned tomato sauce or tomato puree (not spaghetti sauce) in addition to the solid tomatoes.



1 14-oz can of tomatoes





2 tsp chili powder


1 tsp cumin


1 tsp oregano


¼ tsp cayenne (optional)





The sneaky thing about chili powder is that it get hotter as it's warmed up - let the chili cook before deciding to add more. I see a lot of people on Yahoo Answers saying, ';Help! I made my chili too spicy!';






you can use 1teaspoon of cumin three Tablespoons of chili and one and three quarters cups of tomatoes.
