Hodgdon bought Winchester powder if that helps any. I've used Hodgdon/IMR products the most, but I use Alliant Reloader 7 in the .223. What I usually do is consult the bullet manufacturer's list of powders and then cross-reference the Powder manufacturer's information on that type bullet. I hear really good things about Ramshot for the WSM loads, and the metric calibers usually have a good Vihtavuori powder to match up because they are mostly fine tuned in European hunting rifles. Each powder has it's own niche so they all have a spot.

I reload for 223,243Win,30-06 and 300WSM.

The 223 uses the Reloader 7, the 243 I can use IMR 4350 or 4064 depending on bullet weight, the 30-06 has 56.4 grains of IMR 4350 with 165 grain bullets and the 300 uses 64.4 grains of H414 with 165s.

I tried Varget in the 223 and it works well. The 243 didn't like Varget as well, and the 300 WSM did much better with the H414. I do need to try IMR 4350 in the WSM pretty soon. Too much snow and wet to get into range shooting yet. What Is The Best Kind Of Powder To Use When Reloading?
Very useful information. Thanks for helping a fellow reloader. Report Abuse

What caliber or gauge are you reloading??? Is it a handgun or a rifle or a shotgun? Is it metallic cartridge/shot shell reloading or is it for muzzle loaders?

What will you be shooting? Jacketed bullets? Cast lead bullets? Lead/steel shots?

Why you put powders made by American Pioneer, Blackhorn and Geox next to smokeless powders?

What do you intend to do? Target shooting? Home protection? Hunting? Or inexpensive, casual plinking?

Now, do you understand why I answered your question with so many questions? :)
Whichever powder is best suited to the particular rounds you're reloading. All are of excellent quality. They have to be. They are all manufactured for an application where the users life may depend on it.
I used IMR 4064 Powder for 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Winchester) for years! Once I used the 4064, in fact, I never used anything else for that caliber!
