Hi, I'm currently working on a Byzantine inspired religious iconography painting and would like to use some sort of gold material that appears almost like gold flakes. I was wondering if anyone out there knows what's the best material to work with to achieve this effect. Gold foil? Gold powder? Gold flakes? All tips greatly appreciated. Gold leaf or most fine art paint manufacturers make tubes of micaeous gold like oil paint. Hobbists also use metallic enamel paints in the model building too. Lastly automotive finishes.
Real gold works best. When it comes to gold there is no substitute for the real thing. (Not that expensive actually ...well not really considering it IS real gold)

Baring that go for dust and clear acrylic medium. Work thin and fast or it will turn green. Even the lightest whiff of green makes your 'gold' less shiny.
The best is actual gold leaf (gold foil). It's not that expensive, and is what was really used back then.
