Hi, i'm new in reloading and i've read that double base smokeless powder is shock sensitive, is that true?

so if i hit, for example with a hammer, some double base smokeless powder, will it ignite? has someone tried this?Hi, i'm new in reloading and i've read that double base smokeless powder is shock sensitive, is that true?
No, if this were the case, if you drop a 1 lb. canister of it, you will get blown up. This just doesn' happen. Smokeless powder is a propellent NOT an explosive. It needs to be IGNITED by some source, like a primer of a shell case.Hi, i'm new in reloading and i've read that double base smokeless powder is shock sensitive, is that true?
You take a chance of any powder ignighting when hitting explosive substances with a hammer.

Double base powder is no different from single base powder. The difference is a double base powder have two differnt types of powder in it. Many of then will have flakes of different colors. Look at the Dillon Percission Inc. web sight and look at the RL550b the powder you see in the powder measure is a double based powder.

IMR 700-X

IMR 800-X

Are both double based powders. I load 700-x in my 45acp. and can also be used in shotgun loads.

Mr. B
Some double-base powders actually have slower burning curves than their single-base equivalents. They're perfectly safe and as likely to blow up as a heart patient's bottle of nitroglycerine tablets. Also, why in heck would you be beating your propellants with a hammer?
