I'M GOING TO START RELOADING FOR THE .223 (5.56MM) THE .308 (7.62x51MM) 7.62x39MM %26amp; THE 6.5X55MM SWEDISH . i'M JUST LOOKING FOR A GOOD STARTING POINT TO WORK UP PROPER LOADS.55GR.,147GR.,122GR.140GR. RESPECTIVELY..What is the best powder to start out reloading again? I used to reload in the '70's %26amp; 80's?
Bound's hubby here:
I only have experience reloading .223 and .308 Winchester target rounds. I find both Varget and AA2520 to be good powders with these two rounds. I will not recommend loading charges but will suggest that you start 10% below the minimum load recommended in a quality reloading manual for the bullet that you want to load.
Good luck. What is the best powder to start out reloading again? I used to reload in the '70's %26amp; 80's?
I have to agree and second the choice of Varget, then there are choices like 748, BLC2, H 4895, H322, H335, and Ramshot TAC.
Varget will cook off well in all temperatures, it was designed for very cold temperature use, and burns very clean. 748 and BLC2 both meter very accurately but burn dirty.
I would never do without Varget, but it may not be the best choice for the greatest accuracy.
I would recommend Varget. I load it in everything from .204 to .300 Mag. Hodgens website has good info on alot of calibers and min. and max loads foe each of them for their different powders.
Each of those rounds could use a different powder for whatever you're trying to achieve , sure you was a reloader?
Buy a good reloading book. Only use published data. There is no one size fits all powder.
There all good. I like accurate and hodgens. hercules is another good one.
