How does cream of tartar cause baking powder to produce carbon dioxide?

For a detailed description of cream of tartar see ref 1. The cream of tartar is an acid. Baking soda is a base. When they react, you get CO2.





The chemical reaction is





NaHCO3 + KHC4H4O6 ----%26gt; KNaC4H4O6 + H2O + CO2

KHC4H4O6 is the formula for cream of tartar, and NaHCO3 is the formula for baking powder. The reaction produced causes carbon dioxide to be one of the products realeased in the reaction.
